Top Things to Consider when Choosing Wedding Hats

Posted on: June 16, 2011

If you do not want to be constrained by traditional bridal veils, then wedding hats are best for you. You have to admit that veils belong to old school fashion. A lot of women today prefer to wear hats for wedding to give a new twist for their bridal dresses.

The good news is there are lots of options available for you when it comes to bridal hats. You just have to choose a hat that perfectly matches your bridal gown. So here are the crucial things you need to consider to find a suitable bridal headpiece.

Consider Your Height when Choosing a Bridal Hat

Hats for wedding come in various shapes, sizes, styles, and designs. Not all of them however would be suitable for you. You have to carefully choose wedding hats that fit perfectly with your gown. But most importantly, your bridal hat should compliment your body. This way, you will look lovelier when you walk down the aisle.

Petite women should wear smaller hats with short brim. If you are relatively short and you wear an oversized bridal headpiece with overflowing brim, then you will look like a mushroom on the day of your wedding. To be safe, you should always choose small to mid-sized hat and simply adorn it with a simple floral design.

Taller women have more options when choosing a bridal headpiece. They can wear a wide-brimmed picture hat or pagoda. It is also safe for them to wear small cocktail hat or a pillbox bridal headpiece.

Get the Right Size of the Hat

Hat size is an important factor that you should never overlook. It is very uncomfortable to wear wedding hats that are too large for the size of your head. Besides, you will look awkward if you wear a hat that easily falls off from your head.

To get the right hats for wedding, you have to measure the circumference of your head. That is because hats are generally measured based on circumference. What you need to do is to wrap a tape measure around your head. Place the tape measure about one inch above the ear. You also need to give a half-inch allowance so that your head can breathe.

It would be easier to get wedding hats off the shelf. If you buy from a boutique shop, the hats are classified into small, medium, and large. Just pick a bridal hat that fits perfectly on your head. Make sure that it is not too tight or too loose so you can wear it confidently.

Consider the Theme of Your Wedding

Like your gown, bridal hats should match the theme of your wedding. This should be obvious but many brides often wear inappropriate headpieces for the occasion.

If you are planning to have a simple casual wedding, then you might want to consider wearing a cocktail hat or a small pillbox hat. An exotic turban hat, which is inspired by Mediterranean fashion, could be a good option too.

Of course, you will need more formal hats for wedding if you are planning a grander ceremony. Wide brimmed picture hats would be suitable. You can also adorn these hats with elaborate floral designs.
